Mrs.Queens
Founded in September of 2016, Mrs. is a contemporary art gallery located in Maspeth, Queens. Situated away from the geographic center of the New York art world, the gallery collaborates with and showcases a variety of emerging, under-represented, and mid-career artists, in the hopes of engaging the local community and offering a new platform for these artists’ practices. Maspeth’s potential for an arts community has largely been untapped, despite its close proximity to the neighboring communities of Bushwick, Ridgewood, Greenpoint and Long Island City. To date, Mrs. remains a destination and continues to provide an outlet for exploration.
Since its genesis, Mrs. has continued its focus on amplifying the voices of female-identifying, LGBTQIA+ and artists of the global majority, while continuing to enlist narratives that examine and challenge the cultural imbalance which has resounded throughout history. In May of 2020, the gallery announced its official roster including Elizabeth Atterbury, Sarah Bedford, Chris Bogia, Meghan Brady, Oona Brangam-Snell, Mark Mulroney, Sarah Palmer and Carolyn Salas and has since added Rose Nestler and Robert Zehnder. We continue to be indebted to the overwhelming talent and skill they have shared with us; each of them has helped shape what Mrs. is today. The dedication, focus and expert level of craft demonstrated by these artists – along with a keen insight into their own unique practices – has situated them within a larger historical context, and distinguished each of them in extraordinary ways.
The gallery’s dynamic program has received critical praise from outlets such as Artforum, ARTnews, the Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, The Art Newspaper, the New Yorker, and The New York Times, among others. Mrs. has been a proud member of the New Art Dealers Alliance since 2018. The gallery is owned and operated by Sara Maria Salamone and Tyler Lafreniere.
